Rancho Palos Verdes, Los Angeles County
Point Vicente Lighthouse has stood on the cliffs of Rancho Palos Verdes since 1926, marking the turn of the coast toward Los Angeles Harbor. From December through spring, volunteers at the interpretive center next door count gray whales passing on their migration between Alaska and Baja California. The city incorporated in 1973 to keep the surrounding bluffs from dense development.
